To make matters worse, the guys are incognito for longer than I care to stick around. After another hour sitting at the bar, trying to console Echelle, I decide to go find them myself. Echelle chooses to stay at the bar and I can hardly blame her. I wouldn’t want to see the one I love traipsing around a party with some other girl.

After circling the party multiple times, Brett finally saves me from making one more trip around in my heels. They were comfortable at first, but having spent a few hours in them, standing on the hard marble floors, I am ready to go barefoot.

“I just saw them go out on the veranda with Don,” Brett says after I pass by him for the third time. You can access it right over there,” he says, pointing to an open door that leads out to a large balcony.

“Thanks Brett, it was great seeing you.”

“You too,” he says as I wave goodbye.

“Good seeing you too Jessica.”

She does not respond, but flashes a forced smile, as her only parting farewell.

Don, Dylon, and Lamar are smoking a cigar. As expected, the two stunning blondes are there as well as another dark-haired beauty who is standing next to Don. Dylon’s arm is wrapped around the girl next to him and she is clinging to him as though they are a pair of newlyweds.

“Excuse me gentlemen, I hate to interrupt, but it’s getting late.”

Dylon glares at me, he is visibly drunk, and I can tell instantly that getting them to leave will be a fight.

“Hello Aunt Tess,” Lamar says, before coughing through the cloud of cigar smoke curling from his lips.

“Lamar, just puff on it, don’t inhale.” Don instructs him, without acknowledging my presence.

“Okay guys, I know you are having fun, but Echelle and I are ready to go.”

“Come on Tessa,” Don finally looks at me. “Let the guys have a little fun. Why don’t you both take the car and I’ll send them home later?”

Dylon brings his lips to his nameless arm candy. I cringe as they kiss in front of me. I want to march across the balcony and slap him for being so inconsiderate to Echelle, but I decide that Don is probably right. It will be better to get her out of the situation than cause a scene.

When I return to meet up with Echelle she is barely coherent. I have to practically carry her back to the car.

“Where’s Dylon?” She slurs as we hobble out to the dock.

“Dylon is coming home a bit later. We need to get you in bed.”

“No!” She screams, letting go of me to stand her ground. “I don’t want to go without him,” she points at me as though she’s about to give me a lecture. But, no sooner does she spit out the last word does she suddenly lose her balance. I grab hold of her again to keep her steady.

“Please Mumma Sthess, I on’t ant to go.” Her words are barely audible due to her inebriated state.
